Another more popular method was to cake your carpet in clay and let it harden overnight, drawing out oils and other stain- and odor-makers; then, in the morning, again with the beating. Chloroform was also occasionally used, but that didn’t go very far, for obvious reasons (“Does this rug smell like…” *thud*). At some point just after the turn of the last century the state-of-the-art carpet-cleaning machine was a huge roaring thing drawn by a team of horses and stationed outside the building.
So, the next time you have to break out the foaming carpet cleanser or hear yourself saying “This vacuum cleaner sucks!” just remember that it could be a lot worse. At least now when you have your rugs professionally done you don’t have to clean up manure.

After reading this article i am glad that we don't have to put extra effort like people few years ago used to for cleaning the dirt etc from carpets.
